Going to US for Culinary Arts, I should apply for what visa category
You are eligible to apply for the M1 – Vocational Student Visa: The M1 visa is issued for students attending non-academic trade and vocational schools. It is valid for one year. You may not change your field of study or switch to a F1 visa. You need to follow the student visa procedure, and fill the visa form correctly as listed on the usvisa web site . At the time of visa, you will be required to show proof of full payment for the course, housing confirmation and other ban evidence to show that you have more than sufficient funds to cover all expenses for the duration of the course. The visa officer may question you on the decision to pursue the culinary course at such expense in US and your career plan after the program.
Categories of visa for US
F1 - Student Visa: The F1 visa is for full-time students enrolled in an academic or language program. A full-time course load must be maintained and the studies must be completed by the expiration date listed on the I-20 form. Students get an extra 60 days at the end of their course. All students on an FI visa are eligible to apply for a one year Optional Training visa after completing a full time program of more than 9 months in the US. The duration of this OPT visa has been extended to 29 months for students graduating in specific fields like the sciences, mathematics, and engineering. J1 – Exchange Visitor Visa: J-1 visas get issued to individuals who take part in a wide range of exchange visitor programs sponsored by schools, businesses, and a variety of organizations and institutions. These programs are envisioned for business and industrial trainees, scholars, students, international visitors, teachers, research assistants and on cultural missions. In addition, there are several exchange visitor programs for young people, including summer employment programs, internship programs for university students, and au-pair programs.
